Background and History of Lent and Ash Wednesday

Lent is a period of time during the Christian calendar that begins with Ash Wednesday and ends with Easter Sunday.  Essentially, it prepares the Christian for the celebration of the Holy Week that recalls the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  Lent is usually celebrated for forty days – commemorating the period of time Jesus spent fasting in the wilderness at the beginning of His ministry.  This period of time is typically spent focusing on prayer, fasting and justice towards your fellow man.

Ash Wednesday is a Christian holiday that occurs forty-six days (forty days not including Sundays) prior to Easter.  The name Ash Wednesday comes from the ashes that are usually marked on the forehead of a Christian in the form of a cross.  This mark is a symbol of repentance.  In the Bible, we read that dusting oneself with ashes was a sign of sorrow for sins.

Special worship services are routinely hosted by local churches who are typically more liturgical in nature.

City on a Hill Church will celebrate the season of Lent with our community of local believers on March 14, 2010.  Pastor GW will deliver a message from the pulpit at Church on the Rise (formerly Culpeper Free Methodist on Sperryville Pike-across from Redwood Lakes).  The service begins at 7pm.  Please join us!
